Sarasota Trap, Skeet, and Clays is the home club for an active Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP), the Gulf Coast Scholastic Shooters, Inc. also known as “The Hawks. The Scholastic Clays Target Program is a national program conducted in a cooperative effort between the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) and the governing bodies of Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays, as well as the governing bodies of Olympic Trap and International Skeet.
The Gulf Coast Scholastic Shooters, Inc. is organized as separate non-profit 501 (c ) (3) corporation, operating on the generous tax-deductible contributions of club members and members of the community, the support of the Club itself, a grant from the Midway Foundation, and the participation fees of the students.
The Gulf Coast Scholastic Shooters organization was founded by Jack Smart and Larry McIntire in 2006 as a way to get school aged boys and girls interested in and involved in shooting sports. The season for the SCTP program in Sarasota runs from approximately January though the SCTP Florida State Tournament, which is held in May.
SCTP training emphasizes shotgun safety with concentration on the fundamentals of shotgunning, and the development of more advanced shooting skills. All training is conducted by certified instructors assisted by qualified shot-gunners and interested parents. Students are able to learn the three sports in which the SCTP offers competitive programs – Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays.
In addition to training, all youths have the opportunity to compete as a team against other SCTP teams in Florida, including an annual Florida State Championship and a National Championship now held each July in Sparta, Illinois.
Membership in Gulf Coast Scholastic Shooters requires that all members:
1. Are students in grades 12 and under and are under the age of 20.
2. Have an interest in becoming proficient in the handling of shotguns.
3. Can attend training sessions as scheduled by the club managers.
4. Have parental permission to participate.
5. Will properly conduct themselves as Ladies and Gentlemen at all times.
6. Display courtesy and consideration to team members, coaches, other competitors and tournament officials.
7. Exhibit good sportsmanship, win or lose. Neither lie, cheat nor tolerate those who do.
In addition to the requirements, all members must join and remain in good standing with the National Sporting Clays Association and its state association to compete in the Florida State Championship and/or the National Championships.
Shooter Equipment Requirements:
1. Proper eye protection,
2. Proper hearing protection,
3. Either a shooting vest or a shell pouch/belt,
4. A shell/gear bag for transporting the needed equipment,
5. Proper footwear (no sandals or open toed shoes)
In addition, an over and under or semi-automatic shotgun is necessary. For those trainees who do not own a shotgun, or cannot afford to purchase one, Gulf Coast Scholastic Shooters has several club guns which are available for use by our trainees. Those trainees who wish to become more accomplished long term shooters should plan on the eventual purchase of a shotgun. Guns should not be purchased without a consultation with our coaches, so as to be sure the proper gun is acquired.
Student participation fees are determined on a yearly basis depending on the current cost of shooting. Fees for the 2017-2018 season will be $500 per student. If a family has more than one child in the program the fee for the second student is $250. This includes all ammunition and targets for practice once a week for approximately three hours to include safe gun handling and shooting 50 to 100 targets. The total cost per shooter for the 20 week program is approximately $700-750. We rely on fundraising and donations for the balance. The coaches and officials donate their time.
